Cabinetry is typically the single largest line item in a kitchen remodel budget. Refacing — keeping the existing cabinet boxes and replacing only doors, drawer fronts, and hardware — can cut that cost substantially, but it only makes sense under the right conditions.
| Approach | Typical Cost (average SF kitchen) |
|---|---|
| Cabinet refacing | $8,000–$18,000 |
| Full cabinet replacement (semi-custom) | $25,000–$60,000 |
| Full cabinet replacement (custom) | $50,000–$100,000+ |
Some SF kitchens are good candidates for a hybrid approach — refacing the majority of cabinets that are in good shape while fully replacing just the section being reconfigured (for example, adding a pantry cabinet or converting to a different island layout). This can capture much of the cost savings of refacing while still solving specific layout problems.
Photos and general condition descriptions aren't enough to know whether your specific cabinets are good refacing candidates — box material, square condition, and moisture damage all need to be checked in person before committing to either approach.
