Historic Restoration · San Francisco
By Solid Bay Construction SF | Updated 2026
Original leaded and stained glass is one of the most distinctive, and most fragile, details in San Francisco's Victorian and Edwardian housing stock. Restoring it correctly is a specialized craft — very different from a standard window replacement project.
Minor cracks and a handful of broken solder joints can often be repaired in place. A panel that's visibly bowing, has multiple broken came sections, or has been improperly repaired before usually needs full releading — the panel is carefully disassembled, the original glass is cleaned and reused wherever possible, and new came is fitted and soldered following the original pattern.
| Scope | Typical Cost |
|---|---|
| Minor repair (a few came/solder joints) | $300–$800 per panel |
| Full releading, small panel | $800–$2,500 |
| Full releading, large entry or transom window | $2,500–$8,000+ |
| New protective exterior glazing | $200–$600 per panel |
If you're doing a broader remodel that touches the surrounding wall or window frame, coordinate the leaded glass restoration timeline with your general contractor — protecting and temporarily removing panels during construction is far safer than working around them in place.
